      Abstract

This study analyzes the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) on the economic complexity in ASEAN using data from seven countries over the period 2000 to 2022. The estimation is conducted using both static and dynamic panel models (FD-GMM and SYS-GMM), with control variables including GDP per capita, trade openness, government expenditure, financial development, and technological infrastructure. The results show that FDI has a significant negative effect on ECI, while GDP per capita, government spending, and financial development have significant positive effects. The negative effect of FDI suggests that investment has not yet been directed toward high-tech sectors. These findings highlight the importance of refocusing FDI to support structural economic transformation in ASEAN.
