      Abstract

This study examines the modification of the Soybean Crude Urease-Calcite Precipitation method to improve the shear strength of sand soils. The SCU-CP method replaces the pure urease enzyme with soybean extract as a more economical alternative to the EICP method. However, there are challenges such as uneven calcite distribution and low water retention. To overcome this, skim milk and chitosan were introduced as modifying agents. Skim milk contains casein protein which slows down the hydrolysis rate, while chitosan improves water retention and soil cohesion through its hydrophilic properties. Results showed the highest calcite precipitation ratio, valued at 38.13%, occurred at a soybean concentration of 20 g/L. The addition of 7 g/L skim milk increased the solution viscosity significantly, to 5,49 cP, resulting in more even distribution of reagents. Water retention increased rapidly with chitosan blending, reaching a suction value of 13.07 kPa. The UCS test showed that 2 g/L chitosan increased the soil strength from 13 kPa to more than 20 kPa. Optimization of the parameters involved was evidenced by the results of even distribution of calcite reaching the highest average of 2.06%. The optimum composition for sand soil stabilization is 100 g/L soybean with 7 g/L skim milk or 2 g/L chitosan to produce uniform distribution of calcite and increased strength.
