      Abstract

Energy consumption in Indonesia continues to increase. However, the use of energy, particularly non-renewable energy, results in significant CO2 emissions. A more environmentally friendly alternative to non-renewable energy (NRE) is renewable energy (RE), yet the economic feasibility of RE remains a debate. According to the National Energy Policy, the primary priority in energy development is its economic value. However, CO2 emissions are a real threat that must be considered. This study aims to compare the relationship and impact of RE consumption and NRE consumption on GDP and CO2 emissions. The research method used is VECM, utilizing data from 1965-2022. The results show that RE consumption has a negative impact on GDP and CO2 emissions, while NRE consumption has a positive impact on GDP and CO2 emissions. Additionally, a bidirectional causal relationship is found between RE consumption and GDP, RE consumption and CO2 emissions, as well as GDP and CO2 emissions. A unidirectional relationship is also detected from NRE consumption to GDP and CO2.
