Turbidity front is a phenomenon of the formation of freshwater and seawater boundaries due to the meeting of two different water masses between estuary water density and seawater density. The area where the two water masses meet is mixing, causing the substances at the bottom of the water to rise to the surface so that the concentration of nutrients is high. Front turbidity detection using satellite image data is carried out due to the limited use of in situ data. Several critical parameters used to detect turbidity are salinity, turbidity, chlorophyll-a, temperature, tides, and rainfall. This parameter has a direct and indirect relationship to the occurrence of turbidity in the Estuary Bengawan Solo.
The research method used is in situ data and satellite imagery to determine the location of the estuary front turbidity. In situ data retrieval (salinity, turbidity, temperature, and chlorophyll) using the AAQ tool is used to determine the environmental parameters vertically. Meanwhile, Sentinel-2 image data is used to detect the distribution of the Total Suspended Solid (TSS) estuary and the location of the turbidity front by applying an algorithm of band comparisons to obtain a local algorithm in the research area. Furthermore, at the location of the occurrence of turbidity, an analysis of several parameters, namely rainfall, tides, and currents, was carried out to determine the effect of each parameter on the turbidity area.
The study's results based on in situ data revealed drastic changes in the parameters of salinity, turbidity, and temperature at a distance of 2 – 4 km (turbidity front estuary) from the beach in the Bengawan Solo estuary. The best ratio for the detection of TTS distribution in the Bengawan Solo estuary is the red band (B4)/blue band (B2) + green band (B3) + red band (B4). The result of this band ratio has a determination coefficient (R2) = 0,7409 between in situ data and satellite imagery. Based on satellite imagery, the turbidity of the estuary front occurs at a distance of 1,6 – 2,8 km from the coast. There is a difference in TSS value of 1,92 mg/L between in situ data and satellite imagery in the turbidity front estuary area. Season, rainfall, and tides influence the distance of turbidity from the coast. During the rainy season, the length of the turbidity is further from the beach. The current around the Bengawan Solo estuary influences the movement pattern of the estuary turbidity distribution.
