Abstract
Layered double hydroxide (LDH) is a hydrotalcite material that can serve as a Cr(VI) adsorbent through anion exchange, adsorption-reduction, and electrostatic interaction mechanisms. LDH of MgAl and MgAlFe materials were synthesized using the coprecipitation method with a M2+:M3+ molar ratio of 9:4,5. The results of the XRD diffractogram of LDH MgAlFe showed the formation of a hydrotalcite phase with a basal peak of d003 shifting to an area 2θ larger than that of LDH MgAl, which indicated a reduction in the basal spacing of LDH MgAlFe. A laboratory study was conducted to examine the dose and profile of the adsorption isotherm of LDH as Cr(VI) adsorbent at pH 4.The LDH can adsorb Cr(VI) at the optimum dose of 12.5 mg/mL. The LDH MgAl adsorption profile followed the Langmuir model has a maximum adsorption capacity (Qm) value of 45.95 mg.g-1. The MgAlFe LDH adsorption profile followed the Freundlich model has a maximum adsorption capacity (Qm) value of 37.54 mg.g-1. The adsorption results show that LDH MgAl and MgAlFe can function as promising adsorbents for treating Cr(VI) waste.
