      Abstract

The occurrence of large claims on health insurance, are considered as extreme events that can cause a risk of loss for health insurance companies. Therefore, a method that can predict potential future losses is needed, this method is Extreme Value Theory (EVT). One of the EVT methods is the Peaks Over Threshold (POT) method which applies the concept of taking extreme data above a certain threshold, with extreme observations above the threshold follow the Generalized Pareto Distribution (GPD). This method was applied to the claim data of SOA Group Medical Insurance during the period 1991. Based on the results of data processing, it was found that the extreme data with a threshold of 200,000 followed the GPD, with the shape parameter of 137187.70 and scale parameter of 0.127380. To calculate the risk of health insurance claims, the Tail Value at Risk method (TVaR) is used. With confidence level of 95% and 99%, the TVaR values are $264,283 and $532,497, respectively. This shows that the higher the level of trust taken, the greater the risk value in the future.
