dc.description.abstractMimika is a regency in the southern part of Papua Province that has potencial barramundi resource. Local fisheries statistics shows that utilization of barramundi until 2005 is still not optimum. This research acsess about the development of barramundi fisheries in Mimika Regency based on biological, technical, social and economic aspects. The objectives of this research were (1) to determine the development opportunity of barramundi fisheries in Mimika Regency (2) to determine an appropriate and environmental friendly fishing technology of barramundi and (3) to determine the development strategy of barramundi fisheries in Mimika Regency. The research method used were the Schaefer surplus production model, bioeconomic Gordon–Schaefer model, suitable effort analysis, determination of fishing unit and analytical hierarchy process (AHP). The results showed that the estimated MSY for the fisheries was 8.348 ton/year. Opportunity at MSY condition was 6.807 ton/year while at MEY management was 6.553 ton/year. From this conclusion, the effort gillnet fishery was more appropriate and advantage than handline fishery. The gillnet becomes main priority for developing with a strategy of fishermen empowerment and cooperative between stakeholders for improving catch and fishermen income.id
