      Abstract
In 2001, a community-based management of forest resources (CBFR) partnership between Perum Perhutani and vanilla farmers has been implemented in the Sub-district of Padasari, district of Cimalaka, Regency of Sumedang. To date, however, still not all vanilla farmers are interested to join the partnership. The objectives of this study are to analyze socio-economic factors affecting “vanilla farmers” likelihood of joining the partnership, and to analyze the benefits of CBFR partnership for both vanilla farmers and Perum Perhutani. Methods of analysis used are logit model, institutional economic and cost-benefit analysis. Results of the study shows that socio-economic factors affecting the likelihood of vanilla farmers joining CBFR partnership are age, formal education, number of productive family members, and land size (hectarage). Institutionally, the implementation of jurisdiction boundary and rules of representative are running well, but implementation of rights and duties by both parties are distorted. Overall, implementation of CBFR partnership has increased vanilla farmers income and better preserved forest environment indicated by a decrease in illegal logging.
