The main inorganic constituent of human bone is carbonated-hydroxyapatite (CHA). This research aim to synthesis CHA by microwave assisted precipitation. Chicken eggshells calcined at 900oC for 8 hours to get CaO powder. CHA was successfully synthesized by mixing a calcium solution from chicken eggshells with an aqueous solution of NaHCO3 and H3PO4 using microwave irradiation. Microwave offers fast reaction, high yield, and high purity. Samples were irradiated in microwave oven for 30, 35, and 40 minutes with variation of power 40, 200 and 400W. There are fuctional groups of phosphate (PO43-), hydroxyl (OH-), and carbonate (CO32-). The FTIR spectrum indicates that the prepared sampe is B-type carbonated substituted HA because part of phospate groups in the HA sturucture is replaced by carbonated groups. The phase composition was evaluated by XRD and indicated the presence of HA and CHA. The successful synthesis of CHA is critical step forward in our efforts to fabricate bone tissue engineering scaffold.id
