The purpose of this study was to examine the changes in food and non food consumption of low income families in rural and urban areas during the economic crisis, and to investigate the relationship between families’ characteristics and changes in food and non-food consumption. The data were collected from 120 low income families randomly selected from two villages. One village respresented the rural area and the other was the urban area. The results of the study showed that families’ food expenditures in rural area during the crisis was higher than that of before the crisis, however in urban areas, families’ food expenditures was lower. Families’ non-food expenditures in both urban and rural areas during the crisis was higher than that of before crisis. The results of the study also showed that families changed their consumption pattern from expensive to moderate and cheap food and non-food items during the crisis.
