Sludge of leather tanning waste contains micronutrients and macronutrients in large quantiy, on the other hand, it also contains chromium heavy metal. Chromium content of the sludge is about 3-7% of dry matter, so that they limited the use of this sludge as soil conditioner and organic fertilizer. Cr(VI) was very toxic, carcinogenic and mutagenic for most organism. Cr(VI) could be reduced by bacteria, fungi, yeast and algae (Gadd, 1992). The main objective of this research was to study the chemical tranformation of Cr(VI) in the sludge by fungal and bacterial activity through composting process and biomethanogenesis.
