Skate is a great commodity of fisheries in Indonesia, however its utilization has been less explored. Skate cartilage tissue has been known to contain molecules of glycosaminoglycan, which has been widely utilized in therapy of osteoarthritis. The aim of this study was to characterize glycosaminoglycan derived from extraction of bluespotted stingray (Neotrygon kuhlii) and freshwater whipray (Himantura signifer) cartilage. Glycosaminoglycan derived from skate cartilages in this study meets the available standard. FTIR analysis showed a similar spectrum pattern with chondroitin sulfate, which indicated that the type of glycosaminoglycan was chondroitin sulfate. Consentration of glycosaminoglycan from bluespotted stingray cartilage was 74.767 mg/100 mL. This concentration was higher than that in freshwater whipray, which was 66.767 mg/100 mL.en
