Wood is one of the biomass that can be used for alternative energy resources. However, calorific value of wood varies depending on its physical and chemicals properties. This research aims to analyze the effect of density and lignin content on calorific value of wood. Characterization of wood as an energy resource was examined by proximate analysis. Total lignin content of wood was measured by Klason lignin and acid soluble lignin content. The results showed that there was a high correlation between calorific value with wood density, total lignin content, and Klason lignin (r=0.96, r=0.71, and r=0.83, respectively). Based on the proximate analysis, the examined wood species have moisture content in range of 6.64 – 11.09%, volatile matter content 79.32 – 84.08%, ash content 0.31 – 1.18%, fixed carbon 15.27 – 20.37%, and calorific value of 4243– 4576 kcal/kg. Jati, ulin, merbau, and mahoni woods which have high density and lignin content were very good materials for biomass energy. However, jabon and balsa seemed that have very low density causing it has bulky characteristics.
