In wood industry cutting, tools material of high speed steel (HSS) and tungsten carbide (WC) are used largely. An innovative technology to improve the wear resistence is deposition of hard coating film on the surface of tools. The purpose of this research was investigate wear characteristic of WC coated with titanium aluminum nitride (TiAlN), titanium silicon nitride (TiAlN/TiSiN), and titanium boron nitride (TiAlN/TiBN). Tool wear was determined by the edge recession, chemical wear, and the delamination of coating film on clearance face. Mersawa (Anisoptera spp) wood with density of 0.8 g/cm3, extractive of 5.87 %, and silica content of 1% was routed to determine the wear resistance of the coated cutting tools. The extractive content provides a significant contribution on the chemical wearing of the cutting tools. Cutting tests were conducted at a CNC router with cutting speed abaut 16.7 m/s and spindle speed about 10000 rpm. Experimental results showed that TiAlN/TiBN coated has the best performance in the wear resistence. Silica content in Mersawa is an important anorganic component in determining the tool wear rate. Resistence on delamination wear depends on the bonding strength, resistence on oxidation and the coefficient of friction.en
