West Java is the largest province in Java Island that had been experiencing rice field land conversion since 1999. Agricultural statistic data that provide by National Statistic Agency (BPS) has several lacks in monitoring process of rice field area year to year, therefore it is required to improve other alternatives to the collected data by satellite imagery. The aims of this research were to detect rice field area based on rice field categorization in West Java derived from MODIS imagery and to obtain the differences of rice field area between MODIS imagery and agricultural statistic data of BPS from 2002 to 2012. The results showed that there were noticeable differences of rice field area in Ciamis, Bogor, Bandung, and Purwakarta districts. In West Java, rice field area during 2002 until 2010 derived from MODIS imagery were higher than those derived from agricultural statistic data of BPS.en
