      Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the radioprotective effect of roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) extract in radiodiagnostic ionizing radiation on the testicle of mice (Mus musculus). Forty eight adult male of mice were used and divided into 4 groups; control (K), radiation (P), roselle without radiation (R) and roselle with radiation (RP). Mice were treated with 50 mg/kg of BW per oral of roselle extract every two days before recurrent irradiation for 8 weeks. The mice were euthanized then necropsied for testicle collection at various groups and two time points after irradiation. Samples of testicle was processed to prepare histopathology slides using Haematoxilin-Eosin stain. Parameter of the observation are numbers of spermatogenic cells, Sertoli cell, and Leydig cell after whole body irradiation counted using image J software. Quantitative data were analysed with ANOVA test and followed by Duncan post test. The number of cells observed showed a favorable response to the administration of radiation and the roselle extract. The number of cells were decreased in the primary radiation group while in the roselle were not seen. This result showed that Roselle extract was protect cells from radiation effect by recurrent radiodiagnostic ionizing radiation. Administration of roselle extract significantly reduced the bioeffects of radiation. The result suggested that roselle can be used as radioprotector to ionizing radiation on testicular organ.
