Analysis of Indonesian trade openness in Asia: case study for standard international trade classifications

dc.description.abstractThis research has objectives to analyze Indonesian trade openness and trade flows set particularly for its industrial products, in Asia. The research employed Gravity Model in its all analysis. The research covered eight Indonesian trading partners which includes ASEAN (represented by Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippine) and China, Japan, India and South Korea, abbreviated by JACIK. The research utilized secondary data from UNComtrade and IFS International Financial Statistic IMF for the periode 1998 to 2008. The research disclosed that trade openness has positive relationship with our economic growth, number of population, exchange rates and trade conformity index, however it has negative relationship with distance between countries. The research also found that Indonesian international trade flows a Heckscher-Ohlin model more than increasing return or product differentiation or still an inter-industry trade rather than intra-industry trade, substantiated by positive sign of Trade Conformity Index and average lower Grubel Llyod index. The research also found that in general our international trade flows has considerable opportunity to augment its performance, substantiated by research’s finding on Speed of Convergence test in our bilateral trade with our partners, suggesting that they are desirable partners for an Asia FTA.en
