Development of New Variety of Dendrobium Orchid Cut Flowers by Quality Function Deployment (QFD) Approach

Abstract

Development of Dendrobium cut flowers is one of the efforts taken to obtain a better quality of new variety. Breeding program will provide benefits if referring to ideotype plant breeding. The objectives of this research are: 1) to identify a new variety of Dendrobium ideotype as consumer requirement; 2) to identify consumer requirement variables as the priorities to be met by producer in the development of a new variety of Dendrobium cut flower; 3). to determine technical requirement priorities that are according to priorities consumer requirement in the development of a new variety of Dendrobium cut flower. This study use primary data in the form of an interview questionnaire. The sampling method is done by census to 30 Dendrobium cut flowers farmers at Gunung Sindur and Serpong. The data are analyzed by QFD approach by setting House of Quality matrix. The result of the study indicated there are 4 main priorities to be met by breeders in the development of a new variety of Dendrobium cut flowers: (1) Affordabel seeds price; (2) The ability to producing the flower; (3) The ability to gain the seed; (4) colour, shape, and size of the flower. Technical requirement priorities of breeder that according to satisfy consumer requirement priorities in the development of a new variety of Dendrobium cut flowers, are: (1) Reliable information system; (2) Scoring for flower quality characters (3).Tissue culture technology and relation between stakeholders and institute. These suggest that further research is recommended to gain supportive technologies for development new varieties of Dendrobium cut flowers.
