The effect of Sea Surface Temperature (SST) Anomaly and Precipitation to Potential Forest Land Fires in Riau Province

Abstract

Riau is a province which frequently suffered from wildfires. Forest and land fires in Riau province occurred each year on the last decade. The climate is one of the factors that influence the occurrence of forest and land fires in Riau. The purpose of this research is to analyze the correlation between the SST anomalies, precipitation and forest fires in Riau Province. The research conducted from April to June 2012 at the Forest Fires Laboratory, Silviculture Department, Faculty of Forestry, Bogor Agricultural University. The data used are MODIS hotspots, daily precepitation data and Nino 3.4 SST anomalies data. The result shows that the precipitation strongly affected forest fires occurrences in Riau Province from 2001 until 2009, however there is no correlation between SST anomalies precepitation and fire occurrence in Riau Province on that period.

Provinsi Riau merupakan salah satu provinsi yang sering dilanda kebakaran hutan dan lahan. Kejadian kebakaran hutan dan lahan di Provinsi Riau terjadi setiap tahun pada dekade terakhir. Iklim merupakan salah satu faktor alam yang mempengaruhi terjadinya kebakaran hutan dan lahan di Riau. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengetahui hubungan antara Anomali SST, curah hujan dan kejadian kebakaran di Provinsi Riau. Penelitian dilakukan pada bulan April−Juni 2012 di Laboratorium Kebakaran Hutan, Departemen Silvikultur, Fakultas Kehutanan, Institut Pertanian Bogor. Data yang digunakan adalah data hotspot MODIS, data curah hujan harian dan data anomali SST Nino 3.4. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa curah hujan mempengaruhi kejadian kebakaran di Provinsi Riau pada periode 2001 sampai dengan 2009, sedangkan Anomali SST tidak berpengaruh terhadap curah hujan dan kejadian kebakaran di Provinsi Riau pada periode tersebut.
