      Abstract
      Addition of recent volcanic material to increase fertility of weathered soils have been frequently tried, but due to slow release of nutrients from volcanic rocks it is therefore there is still no tangible benefit of ameliorating soil with such materials. Various attempts to increase the release of nutrients from volcanic rocks have been tried such as grinding the rocks into a smaller size as well as use of chemical reagents to acidify rocks. However, all these trials still resulted in slow rates of nutrient release. This research aims to study the role of humic compounds in the release of the elements of andesitic-basaltic rock (sand size) and as well as to understand the processes. The method used in this research include: reaction of andesitic-basaltic sand with humic compounds by soaking experiment, chemical analysis of the sand using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) and Flamephotometer.and mineralogical analyses of the sand using Polarizing Microscope and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM).
       
      Penambahan bahan volkanik muda untuk menambah kesuburan alami tanah-tanah yang telah terlapuk lanjut sudah lama dilakukan, akan tetapi mengingat pelepasan unsur hara dari batuan volkanik tersebut umumnya berjalan sangat lambat, sehingga sampai saat ini belum terlihat manfaatnya secara nyata sebagai bahan amelioran. Berbagai usaha untuk meningkatkan kelarutan batuan tersebut telah dilakukan sebagai contoh: usaha penghancuran batuan menjadi ukuran yang lebih kecil, demikian pula dengan pereaksi kimia seperti mengasamkan batuan. Akan tetapi semua hasil tersebut masih belum menunjukkan pelepasan unsur hara yang cukup nyata untuk diaplikasikan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mempelajari peranan senyawa humat dalam pelepasan unsur-unsur dari batuan (ukuran pasir) Andesitik-Basaltik dan sekaligus untuk memahami proses-proses yang terjadi. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini meliputi; analisis mineral dengan Polarizing Microscope dan Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), analisis unsur hara dengan Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) dan Flamephotometer.
