A description was given on the muscle anatomy of the hip and thigh of the Sumatran rhino. The study was conducted to observe the muscle anatomy, including their origins and insertions in order to describe the muscle functions and to compare the muscle structure with other animals. This study used cadaver of one adult male rhino preserved in 10% formaline. The muscles in the hip and thigh region were observed macroscopically after the skin was incised and opened. The origins and insertions of the muscles were determined by dissecting the fascia and the muscles. The results were documented by photograph and the muscles were named based on Nomina Anatomica Veterinaria 2005. The muscles found in the hip and thigh region were gluteus superficialis, gluteus medius, gluteus profundus, tensor fasciae latae, biceps femoris, semitendinosus, semimembranosus, quadriceps femoris (vastus lateralis, rectus femoris, vastus intermedius, and vastus medialis), gemelli, quadratus femoris, sartorius, gracilis, pectineus, and adductor. Some muscles such as the gluteus superficialis, biceps femoris, semimembranosus, vastus medialis, rectus femoris, and sartorius were different. The muscle anatomy of the hip and thigh of the Sumatran rhino were quite similar to that of a pig, babirusa, and horse.en
