      Abstract
Sugar cane (Saacharum Officinarum L) is a plant where sugar came from. Sugar cane has a distinct economic potential. The needs of sugar in this country is getting bigger every year, and it makes government must act faster to give people needs. The purpose of this study is to make South Borneo as a new solution for increasing domestic production of sugar cane. South Borneo has a huge suitable area to expand this commudity. This study is based on the method as described by FAO and used GIS capability for an integration of land qualities to create land unit. A simple map subsystem (Arcview GIS) was used for basic data and models result demonstration on a map. Climatic and soil requirements for sugarcane growth were identified and a land suitability map was produced by overlaying the climatic and soil suitability maps. The land with good capability for agriculture uses is classified as highly suitable (S1) and moderately suitable (S2), the land with a lower quality is classified as a marjinally suitable (S3) and not suitable (N). According to results, 49,26% of the total area or about 1.930.240 ha was good capable for sugarcane uses, and 50,74% is not dedicated for agriculture. The most suitable areas are found in the south of the province. In the rest of the province climatic or soil conditions are expected to restrict sugarcane growth. The results of this study can be used for further research on the possibilities for a large-scale commercialisation of the crop in South Borneo and in other regions with favourable ecological conditions.
