Tropical rainforests in Indonesia receive special attention currently because of their important role in influencing global climate changes. The increasing temperature of the Earth and its cause is increasing Green House rate concentration in the atmosphere. One of the efforts to suppress the rate of global warming is to reduce the rate of forest deforestation and degradation. Environmental degradation caused by mining activities has caused damage on vegetation structure fauna diversity, soil, as well as the natural ecosystem. One of the example places of environmental degradation caused by mining activities is in Bangka-Belitung Province. The implementation of remote sensing techniques has been used in Indonesia. However, remote sensing technique has limitations on image data recording particularly the use of optical satellite image. The limitation of optical satellite image related to the condition clouds. Active remote sensing system (RADAR) has the capability of recording in all weather. One of the RADAR sensor satellites that was launched by Japan's Government is ALOS (Advanced Land Observing Satellite) with one of its sensors is namely PALSAR (Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture RADAR). This sensor is an active microwave sensor that has a capability to penetrate the thick cloud layer. The aim of this research was to estimate the distribution of biomass in an reclaimed mine area of Bangka-Belitung province using 50 m resolution of ALOS PALSAR image. Field biomass was estimated using allometric biomass models and tree density approach. The biomass estimation models were developed using regression analysis by relating the field biomass values and the backscatter values of HH and HV polarizations of the ALOS PALSAR image. Based on this research, the classes of land cover generally consisted of plantation forests, mixture gardens, rubber plantations, oil palm plantations, and bare land. The biomass measurement on sample plots showed that the reclaimed mining area ha the lowest biomass of 6,59 tons/ha and the highest biomass of 264,62 tons/ha with the mean biomassof 78,84 tons/ha. The HV backscatter values tended to be lower than that of HH values with the average of backscatter valuesof -15,66 and -8,77, respectively. The regression analysis confirmed that HV polarization can be used for stimating the biomass of the reclaimed mining area using the biomass estimation model Y = X /(0,997+0,092X). The model had RMSE of 31,50%,and R2 of 57,1 %, which has also satisfied the assumption of normality and homocedasticity of regression analysis. Based on this model, the biomass of reclaimed mining area can be classified into low biomass (48,93 %), medium biomass (41,47 %), and high biomass (9,60 %).This results confirmed that the reclaimed mining areas were still dominated by young trees with lower biomass.en
