Antibiotics are natural products of a microorganism, identical synthetic products or similar semi synthetic products that inhibit the growth of or destroy microorganisms. In veterinary medicine antibiotics are used for therapeutic, prophylactic, metaphylactic and nutritive purposes. The presence of antibiotics or their metabolites in food is potentially hazardous to health as it may cause allergic reactions in people and antibiotic resistance in pathogenic microorganisms. In addition antibiotics may influence starter cultures in food industry and lead to economic damage. The aims of this research were to detect antibiotic residue in imported beef and to analyze the effectivenes of rapid test as screening method to detect antibiotic residue in imported beef as a part of quarantine inspection. Samples size was calculated using detect disease formula and selected by random sampling. Datas regarding the proportion of antibiotic positive samples were analyzed descriptively. Rapid test showed that, 24 of the 70 samples (34.29%) contained antibiotic residue, while 17 (24.29%) samples contained antibiotic residue detected by using bioassay. Bioassay showed that samples contained beta lactams, tetracycline, macrolide, and aminoglycoside.en
