Factors influencing the performance of agricultural extension workers and its impact on the competence of cacao farmers in four district South Sulawesi Province

The agricultural extension worker’s performance was the work outputs achieved by agricultural extension workers in conducting their jobs. The aims of this research were to know the factors which influence agricultural extension worker’s performance and the connection between the factors, and to know that factors influences the cacao farmers competence. The population of this research was all the agricultural extension workers in four districts, South Sulawesi Province (447 people). The sample of this research referred to Slovin method from among 106 (one hundred and six) agricultural extension workers, 106 (one hundred and six) group farmers leaders and 212 (two hundred and twelve) cacao farmers . The design of this research was conducted by survey method and followed by interview to respondents. LISREL program with ‘SEM’ was used in analyzing data. The Result of this research show that the agricultural extension worker’s performance was influenced significantly by competence, motivation, and self reliance. The coefficient of each influencing factors were 0,71; 0,24 and 0,33 respectively. The above coefficients had a value of significant level at α = 0,05. The total influence of them were 67 percent, and 33 percent were represent other influences outside this study. The coefficient of the influence of agricultural extension worker performance and a head farmer’s group competence are 0,19 and 0,24 respectively. The total influence of them were 10 percent and 90 percent represented other influences outside this study. The recomendation of the research was that their performance must be improved by providing special training to improve their capability in agricultural extension planning, monitoring and evaluation, agricultural extension development and technology disemination. Kinerja (performance) merupakan hasil kerja yang dicapai individu secara aktual dalam suatu organisasi sesuai tugas dan tanggungjawab yang diberikan kepadanya yang dilaksanakan secara efektif dan efisien berdasarkan periode waktu tertentu dalam rangka mencapai tujuan organisasi. Kinerja penyuluh pertanian yang baik berdampak pada perbaikan kinerja petani dalam memproduksi kakao. Kinerja penyuluh terarah pada pemecahan masalah yang dihadapi oleh petani dalam melaksanakan usahatani kakao.
