Studi Populasi dan Penyebaran Babi Hutan Sulawesi (Sus celebensis Muller dan Schlegel, 1843) di Suaka Margasatawa Tanjung Peropa, Sulawesi Tenggara
Abstract
Sulawesi Warty Pig (Sus celebensis) is endemic to Sulawesi, Indonesia. Very few data and information are available for this species. Study of demography and distribution are necessary to manage population this species in their natural habitat. This study was conducted in Tanjung Peropa Wildlife Reserve, Southest Sulawesi from Juni until July 2006. Population was estimated using line transect method. result of the vegetation analyses shown that the dominant species in riparian, lowland and bamboo forest were wewu, kapu wone and kowuna respectively. Distribution of Sulawesi warty pig in the study area, was systematic. For local distribution, distribution in bamboo and riparian forest were random and in lowland forest was systematic. There was 172 species of plant species recorded in study area, 109 species of them were food item of sulawesi warty pig. These animals were frequently found wallowing in bamboo and feeding in riparian forest. Rest sites of sulawesi warty pig in caves and rock shekters and nest area in hills. Deforestation and poaching were the main threats at their population in natural habitat. Status of sulawesi warty pig is still unprotected, thus the management of population in their natural habitat ws facing some difficulties. For conservation at this species its status should be given and clarified
