      Abstract
This research aim was to study the histopathological features of lungs in broiler that challenged by Avian Influenza (AI) H5N1 virus after treatment with sirih merah (Piper crocatum) extract. Fourteen Cobbs of broiler were divided into 4 groups treatment included negative control (KN) who were not given the sirih merah extract and not challenged by AI virus, positive control (KP) who were not given the sirih merah extract but challenged by AI virus, negative treatment (PN) who were given the sirih merah extract but not challenged by AI virus, positive treatment (PP) who were given the sirih merah extract and challenged by AI virus. Treatment of the sirih merah (Piper crocatum) 10% extract/ml/head broiler was for three weeks per os and then challenged with Avian Influenza H5N1 virus 104,0 EID50/0,1 ml per head intra nasal in BSL-3 facilities. The result of this research showed that the histopathological features of lung in broiler group PP would be similar to the KN with the congestion and oedema, however lesser than those PN whereas oedema was not shown. The KP group showed the worst lesion than other groups with necrose in the alveol. Based on the statistical analysis showed that KP group was significantly different compared to the KN group however no significantly different while compared to the PP and PN. In conclusion, the treatment of sirih merah (Piper crocatum) extract to broiler followed by challenging with AI H5N1 virus can reduce the mortality and damage of lungs organ.
