dc.description.abstractThe objective of this research is to understand the relationship between the community structure and biomass density of demersal fishes in South China Sea Indonesian Waters. This research is devided into two phases: data collection and laboratory analysis. the first phase was conducted from 10 September until 5 October 2001, in 14-72 meters of water depth in South China Sea. Purposive random sampling was done over 19 station in trawlable bottom waters using swept area method. The second phase, the laboratory analysis was conducted from 1 November 2001 until 30 May 2002. In this phase, the observation to the contain of 250 of Saurida undosquamis gut for understand the food habits of. Saurida undosquamis. The result showed that the biomass density of demersal fishes in South China Sea Indonesian waters distribute evenly until 72 meters depth. It is found that, in general the deeper the waters the bigger the size of individual demersal fish. The temperature, salinity, transparancy and depth factors are the governing factors that influence the demersal fishes species distribution. On the other hand, the influnce of temperature, salinity, transparancy and depth to the biomass density are very weak. The influence of these factors to the biomass density are simultaneous. The influence of salinity to the species distribution and biomass density of demersal fishes in South China Sea is the greatest. In the waters that is still influnced by the estuary, the biomass density is greater. Alepes kalla, Selaroides leptolepis, Scutor ruconeus, Leiognathus leusiscus, Pomadasys maculatus, Pomadasys argyreus, Pampus argenteus Upeneus tragula and Nemipterus mesoprion distributed in the shallow and the low salinity and the high temperature waters. On the other hand, Nemipterus marginatus, Nemipterus peronii, and Nemipterus tambuloides, Priacanthus macracanthus distributed in the deeper, high salinity and low temperature waters. Atropus atropus, Gazza minuta, Leiognatus equulus and Scomberomorus commerson distributed in the waters with high transparency. Scolopsis taeniopterus, Saurida undosquamis and Priacanthus tayenus are hight tolerancy to environmental factors and distributed evenly in LCS.
