dc.description.abstractA preliminary study was conducted an March 1 - 10, 1983 to examine the possibility of goat development programme in the transmigration project of Batumarta, Eouth (If Sumatera. A total of 120 .Lransmigrant samples were ;::c_,.Tin from 4 village units (Unit I - IV) • .. ]10 average age of Batumartatransmigrants were 41 yea't's old. Most of them ever attended a primary school (60.~~), a secondary scbool (7.3%), a high school (7.2Jb), an inseminator course (0.9'fo) and a transmi~ation course (O.9lfo). Some of them, however, are still illiterate (23.7%), but all of their children had ever been or being in school now in Batumarta. Most of the transmigrants inquire credit for goat keeping (50.~~), some for raising chicken (29.~~), cattle (8.&~) and muscovy (2.3%). The average size of goat raising asked is between 2 - 4 goats, and most of tl:e transmigrant acquire goat by means of sharing manageme!".t (34.8J"t;) and by paying 2 young goats of about 8 months old for each doeS received, and will fo;Uew the regulation existed (18. qb) or by paying in c.ash (13~&~).id
