This research is based on the importance developing vanilla farming (Vanilla planifolia) based on sustainable agricultural development oriented to the Triple Bottom Line approach (economic / profit, social / people, and environmental / planetary aspects). The island of Lombok (West Nusa Tenggara) is one of the potential vanilla center areas that has adopted a variety of cultivation systems, ranging from conventional, intercropping/agroforestry, to the application of greenhouse technology and certified organic cultivation. Vanilla commodities have high competitiveness and economic value to reach an organic export price of Rp1.8 million/kg of dry. Vanilla farming at the farmer level is still faced with fluctuations in production and export productivity, vulnerability to pest and blight attacks, price fluctuations, and limited human and institutional capacity. The existence of a partnership pattern between farmers and exporters such as UD. Lombok Organic Spices creates a difference in governance with non-partner farmer groups (independent), so it is necessary to conduct a study on the sustainability status of partner and non-partner farmer farming on Lombok Island. This study aims to: (1) analyze the sustainability status of vanilla farming in partner and non-partner farmer groups on Lombok Island in economic, social, and environmental dimensions, and (2) analyze sensitive attributes that are leverage attributes for the sustainability of vanilla farming in the two farmer groups. Primary data collection was carried out from September to December 2024 in four main center areas: Sembalun Sajang Village (East Lombok Regency) and Bayan Village (North Lombok Regency) as partner farmer bases; and Timbanuh Village (East Lombok Regency) and Pemepek Village (Central Lombok Regency) as non-partner farmer bases. The research sample amounted to 130 farmers, consisting of 74 partner farmers who were drawn using the census method (total sampling) and 56 non-partner farmers who were drawn through saturation data-based snowball sampling techniques. The analysis method used was the Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) method based on the Rapid Appraisal for Vanilla (RAP-Vanilla) approach. The ordination measurement transformed the ordinal values of 21 attributes (7 economic attributes, 6 social attributes, and 8 environmental attributes) into a sustainability index interval of 0–100%. Furthermore, Leverage Analysis using the magnitude of the Root Mean Square/RMS change was applied to determine the sensitive attributes that are the leverage factors for the sustainability of vanilla farming. The reliability of the model and the stability of the index score were statistically tested with Monte Carlo simulations at a 95% confidence interval and goodness-of-fit evaluation based on the Stress value parameters (< 0.25) and the R² determination coefficient (> 0.80). Vanilla agribusiness policies in Lombok Island must be focused on improving leverage attributes to ensure economic, social and environmental sustainability in the long term. The results showed that the sustainability status of vanilla farming at the level of partner and non-partner farmers showed different index values. In the economic dimension, partner farmers had a sustainability index of 73.63 with a fairly sustainable status category, higher than non-partner farmers of 39.24 with a less sustainable status category. In the social dimension, both partner and non-partner farmers were in the category of quite sustainable, with an index value of 60.49 and 68.04, respectively. Meanwhile, in the environmental dimension, both groups of farmers were also in the category of moderately sustainable, with an index value of 60.58 for partner farmers and 61.41 for non-partner farmers. The leverage analysis identified that the sustainability leverage factors were different in each dimension and group of farmers. In the economic dimension, the sustainability of partner farmers was mainly influenced by increased market demand and cooperation with collectors or exporters, while in non-partner farmers it was more determined by the ability of farmers to meet household income needs. In the social dimension, education level is the main leverage factor in both groups of farmers, with activity in the farmer group being a supporting factor for partner farmers and the participation of family members in non-partner farmers. Meanwhile, in the environmental dimension, the attribute of pesticide use is the most sensitive factor in partner farmers, while in non-partner farmers sustainability is more influenced by optimal land area. The findings show that strategies to increase the sustainability of vanilla farming need to be specifically designed according to the characteristics of each farmer group and the leverage factors in each dimension, so that the interventions carried out can take place more effectively and sustainably.
