      Abstract

Pharmaceutical wastewater containing the synthetic dye Allura Red may remain colored after conventional wastewater treatment processes, indicating the need for a more effective polishing treatment. This study aimed to prepare phosphoric acid (H3PO4)-activated coconut shell activated carbon, evaluate the effect of different activated carbon proportions on Allura Red color removal, and determine the corresponding removal efficiency. A column filtration system was employed using activated carbon proportions of 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50%. The activated carbon was characterized based on its moisture content, ash content, and iodine adsorption capacity. Filtration performance was evaluated by measuring changes in absorbance using UV–Visible spectrophotometry. The results showed that increasing the proportion of activated carbon enhanced its adsorption capacity and improved the removal efficiency of Allura Red, demonstrating its potential as an effective filtration medium for pharmaceutical wastewater treatment.
