      Abstract

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is the primary staple food crop in Indonesia, and its production can decline due to infestations of the brown planthopper (BPH) (Nilaparvata lugens Stål). This pest is commonly controlled using insecticides synthetic, however excessive application can affect natural enemy populations. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of synthetic, bioinsecticide, and botanical insecticides on the populations of the brown planthopper and its predators in rice fields. The experiment was conducted in a ± 900 m² rice field using a randomized complete block design with four treatments and six replications. The treatments consisted of a synthetic insecticide containing chlorantraniliprole, a bioinsecticide containing Bacillus thuringiensis and Serratia marcescens, a botanical insecticide containing neem (Azadirachta indica) leaf extract, and an untreated control. Brown planthoppers were first detected at two weeks after transplanting. None of the insecticide treatments significantly affected brown planthopper populations or those of most predator taxa. Predators recorded during the study included Cyrtorhinus lividipennis, Paederus fuscipes, Ophionea nigrofasciata, lady beetles (Coccinellidae), and spiders belonging to the families Lycosidae, Oxyopidae, Tetragnathidae, and Araneidae. The low brown planthopper population observed during the study was likely associated with the persistence of predator communities that contributed to suppressing pest population development.
