      Abstract

The red spider mite Tetranychus kanzawai is one of the major pests of cassava, causing leaf tissue damage and yield losses. Control is commonly achieved using acaricides; however, these chemicals may adversely affect non-target organisms, humans, and the environment. Botanical pesticides, such as bougainvillea leaf extract, offer a potential alternative for mite control. This study aimed to test the effectiveness of bougainvillea leaf extract against T. kanzawai. The extract was prepared by maceration using 99.8% methanol and subsequently synthesized into nanoparticles through alginate nanoencapsulation and ultrasonication. Treatments were applied by spraying at each mite developmental stage, and mortality and symptoms of death were recorded at 24, 48, and 72 HAT, and up to 96 HAT for eggs. The results showed that all treatments significantly affected mite mortality. Pyridaben at 1000 ppm produced the highest mortality compared with the other treatments at every observation time. The EDB treatment was more effective than EDB-NP against eggs and nymphs, with mortality rates of 70% (500 ppm) and 60% (1000 ppm), and 52,22% (500 ppm) and 50% (1000 ppm), respectively. In contrast, EDB-NP at 1000 ppm was more effective against adults, resulting in a mortality rate of 54,08%. These findings demonstrate that bougainvillea leaf extract is capable of killing T. kanzawai due to the presence of secondary metabolites, namely flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, tannins, phenols, and terpenoids.
