      Abstract

Oil palm plantation is a strategic commodity supporting the Indonesia’s economy; nevertheless, unsustainable land management may lead to soil fertility degradation and increased emissions. Implementation of conservation practices capable of enhancing soil carbon stocks represents a viable mitigation approach. This study was conducted to analyze the effect of soil conservation practices on soil carbon stock estimation in oil palm plantations and to identify the contributing factors. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) comprising three treatments was employed: K0 (control), K1 (ditch combined with empty fruit bunches (EFB)), and K2 (infiltration pits combined with oil palm fronds (OPF)). Soil samples were collected through random sampling and subsequently analyzed using ANOVA (p<0.05), followed by the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test at the 5% level, along with correlation analysis among soil parameters. Results indicated that conservation practices exerted a significant effect on soil organic carbon and soil carbon stocks, whereas no significant effect was observed on bulk density or soil pH. The ditch + EFB treatment yielded the highest soil carbon stock at 0–15 cm depth (80.97 tons/ha) relative to infiltration pits + OPF and the control, and is accordingly recommended as an appropriate conservation practice for enhancing soil carbon stocks at the study site. Furthermore, soil carbon stock exhibited a very strong, positive correlation with soil organic carbon (r = 0,98).
