      Abstract
RAKANITA FAATIHAH RAMADHINA. RAKANITA FAATIHAH RAMADHINA. Ulvan–Pigment Complexes as Natural Dyes and Bioactive Agents for Agar–Gelatin-Based Bioplastics. Supervised by MEGA SAFITHRI and WAHYU RAMADHAN. Bioplastics have emerged as promising alternatives to synthetic plastics; however, the incorporation of natural colorants and bioactive compounds into bioplastic matrices remains limited. Ulvan extracted from Ulva lactuca contains sulfated polysaccharides and natural pigments that form Ulvan–Pigment Complexes (UPC), offering potential as multifunctional components in bioplastics. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize the physical and chemical properties of agar–gelatin-based bioplastics incorporated with UPC and to evaluate its potential as a structural matrix component, a source of bioactivity, and a natural colorant. UPC was extracted by hot-water extraction followed by isopropyl alcohol precipitation and incorporated into bioplastic formulations containing 2% (w/v) total biopolymer solids with glycerol as a plasticizer. The resulting bioplastics were characterized for their physical, chemical, color, and antioxidant properties. Increasing the UPC proportion reduced the swelling ratio and increased the contact angle, indicating improved water resistance. FTIR analysis confirmed hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions between UPC and the biopolymer matrix while preserving the characteristic sulfate and glycosidic functional groups of ulvan. UPC also imparted green to yellowish-green coloration and exhibited radical scavenging activity. These findings demonstrate the potential of UPC as a multifunctional component serving simultaneously as a structural matrix, natural colorant, and bioactive agent for sustainable marine biomass-based bioplastics. Keywords: antioxidant activity, bioplastics, natural colorant, Ulva sp, Ulvan– Pigment Complexes (UPC).
