      Abstract

Rats are cosmopolitan rodents that serve as reservoirs for various zoonotic diseases through the ectoparasites that infest them. This study aimed to identify the types of ectoparasites found on several rat species. The study was conducted from November 2025 to May 2026. Rat samples were captured using the single live trap method and were collected from four types of habitats: around residential areas, waterways, thickets, and rice fields. The ectoparasite infestation rate reached 36% of the total 100 rats, and 62 ectoparasites were found. The rat samples collected during the study were identified as belonging to four species, Rattus argentiventer, R. tiomanicus, R. norvegicus, and R. tanezumi. Ectoparasites were found on three of these four rat species, Laelaps nutalli (Mesostigmata: Laelapidae), Echinolaelaps echidninus (Mesostigmata: Laelapidae), and the flea Xenopsylla cheopis (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae). Rattus argentiventer was the rat species with the highest number of ectoparasites. These findings underscore the importance of vigilance regarding potential public health risks.
