      Abstract

Oil palm is a strategic commodity influenced by climate variability, particularly solar radiation, air temperature, and rainfall, through CO2 and H2O fluxes. This study aims to (1) analyze the effect of climate variability on the physiological performance of oil palm; (2) evaluate the agroclimatic suitability of oil palm in Jambi Province; and (3) projecting the relative climatic suitability of oil palm during the baseline period and the 2050s projection using MaxEnt and evaluate its spatial relationship with estimates of potential physiological performance derived from upscaling. The analysis was conducted using CO2 and H2O flux data from the eddy covariance system at PTPN VI Batanghari, historical and projected climate data, soil data, and statistical and spatial modeling methods, including Pearson’s correlation, linear regression, generalized additive models (GAM), and the MaxEnt model. The results of the eddy covariance analysis indicate that climate variability is related to the physiological dynamics of oil palm. Solar radiation is the environmental factor showing the strongest and most consistent relationship with GPP and ET, followed by air temperature and vapor pressure deficit (VPD). Rainfall did not show a strong direct relationship at the temporal scales analyzed, while WUE showed a moderate to weak relationship with the observed climate variables. At the spatial scale, GAM modeling results indicate that climate variables are effective at explaining variations in GPP and ET, whereas the model’s ability to explain variations in WUE is relatively limited. An agroclimatic suitability assessment shows that most of Jambi Province falls into the “moderately suitable” (S2) and “highly suitable” (S1) classes, particularly in the central to eastern regions, including Batanghari Regency, while the “marginally suitable” (S3) class is more prevalent in the western part of Jambi Province, which is influenced by topography and air temperature. The absence of areas classified as unsuitable (N) indicates that the agroclimatic conditions of Jambi Province remain within the tolerance range for oil palm growth. MaxEnt modeling shows that during the baseline period, areas with relatively high climate suitability were concentrated in the central to eastern parts of Jambi Province. Projections for 2050s based on the SSP245 and SSP585, the majority of models and ensemble results indicate a trend toward a decrease in the area with relatively high suitability, particularly under the high-emission scenario (SSP585), but its spatial pattern vary among GCMs. This study demonstrates that integrating physiological fluxes, agroclimatic evaluation, and MaxEnt modeling within a spatial analysis and interpretation framework provides more comprehensive information on biophysical and climatic suitability, serving as a scientific basis for further evaluation of oil palm cultivation potential.
