      Abstract

Actinobacteria are a group of bacteria capable of producing bioactive compounds with potential as natural bioinsecticides. The armyworm, Spodoptera litura, is an important agricultural pest whose control still relies heavily on chemical insecticides. Continuous use of these insecticides may lead to insecticide resistance, environmental contamination, and adverse effects on non-target organisms. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of Actinobacteria as biological control agents against S. litura. Ten Actinobacteria isolates were fermented in ISP-2 medium, and their bioactive compounds were evaluated against second-instar larvae using baby corn as the feeding substrate. The observed parameters included larval mortality, antifeedant activity, developmental duration, and survival rate. Mortality, antifeedant activity, and developmental duration were analyzed using the Kruskal–Wallis test followed by Dunn–Bonferroni's post hoc test, whereas survival rate was analyzed descriptively. All isolates exhibited low larvicidal activity, with the highest mortality of 6% recorded for Nocardia wallacei and TRK1B1 (90). The highest antifeedant activity was observed in Cutibacterium acnes (DCK1T7 156), TRK1B1 (90), and Brevibacterium casei. Cutibacterium acnes (DCK1T7 156) prolonged the duration of the sixth larval instar and pupal stage and reduced survival to 75% at the pupal stage and 65% at the adult stage, indicating its potential as a biological control agent against S. litura.
