      Abstract
      Air limbah peternakan sapi yang terdiri dari urin, sisa kotoran hewan, sisa pakan, air pencucian, serta air domestik mengandung nilai BOD yang cukup tinggi sehingga berpotensi mencemari lingkungan. Rotating biological contactor adalah alat pengolahan biologi yang memanfaatkan attached growth untuk menyisihkan BOD. Penelitian bertujuan untuk merancang unit RBC sebagai teknologi pengolahan air limbah peternakan sapi untuk menurunkan kadar BOD. Variasi yang digunakan adalah luas area terendam 30%, 50%, dan 70%. Variasi luas area terendam 30% menghasilkan kinerja penyisihan BOD terbaik dengan konsentrasi BOD akhir sebesar 99,84 mg/L sehingga telah memenuhi baku mutu air limbah berdasarkan Permen LH Nomor 5 Tahun 2014. Hal ini dikarenakan luas area terendam tersebut memberikan keseimbangan yang lebih baik antara kontak biofilm dengan air limbah dan paparan oksigen dari udara sehingga proses biodegradasi berlangsung lebih optimal dibandingkan variasi luas area terendam lainnya.
       
      Cattle farm wastewater, consisting of urine, animal manure residues, feed residues, wash water, and domestic wastewater, contains relatively high Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) concentrations, posing a potential risk of environmental pollution. The Rotating Biological Contactor (RBC) is a biological wastewater treatment technology that utilizes an attached-growth process to remove BOD. This study aimed to design an RBC unit as a treatment technology for cattle farm wastewater to reduce BOD concentrations. The reactor was operated with three submerged area variations: 30%, 50%, and 70%. The 30% submerged area achieved the best BOD removal performance, resulting in a final BOD concentration of 99.84 mg/L, which complied with the wastewater quality standard stipulated in the Indonesian Minister of Environment Regulation No. 5 of 2014. This result was attributed to the 30% submerged area providing a more favorable balance between biofilm contact with wastewater and oxygen exposure from the air, thereby promoting a more efficient biodegradation process than the other submerged-area variations.
