Red chili pepper is one of the strategic horticultural commodities that plays an important role in meeting household consumption needs and contributing to the national economy. The demand for red chili peppers continues to increase, but the commodity is prone to fluctuations in supply and price, causing price instability that affects farmers’ incomes and business performance. Partnerships are one of the solutions offered, as they provide price stability, market access, and support for agricultural inputs. However, the level of farmer participation in partnerships remains relatively low compared to the potential for partnership development. On the other hand, various previous studies have shown that the impact of partnerships on increasing farm income has yielded mixed results. This study aims to analyze the factors that influence farmers’ decisions to participate in partnerships and the impact of partnerships on red chili farming income in Indonesia. The data used came from the 2014 Horticultural Crop Farm Household Survey with a sample size of 18,481 farmers. The analysis methods used included logistic regression and propensity score matching (PSM).
The results show that age, land area, farmer group membership, access to credit, and cooperative membership have a significant effect on farmers’ decisions to join partnerships. Thus, partnerships have a positive impact on several indicators of red chili farming income, particularly Net Farm Income, Return on Total Capital, and Return on Family Labor, although these results should be interpreted with the 10% significance level in mind. This study provides strategic recommendations to increase farmer participation in partnerships through institutional strengthening of farmer groups and cooperatives, expanding access to financing, and strengthening the implementation and oversight of partnership regulations to ensure price certainty, market certainty, and the sustainability of cooperation between farmers and business partners. Consistent policy support and synergy among the government, partner companies, farmer groups, cooperatives, and farmers are necessary for partnerships to function more effectively in increasing the income of red chili farmers in Indonesia.
