      Abstract

The "Indonesia Emas 2045" vision sets an ambitious target of transforming into a high-income, developed nation. However, the journey toward this vision faces structural challenges, particularly the risk of falling into the middle-income trap. Meanwhile, current economic conditions reveal unbalanced structural transformation dynamics. This is evident in the declining contribution of the agricultural sector to GDP, accompanied by a drop in the manufacturing sector's contribution. These dynamics suggest that Indonesia's industrialization appears stagnant and tends to be slowing down. This trend is reinforced by the economic shift toward the services sector, where the contribution continues to rise. Such conditions signal the need for a paradigm shift from growth driven by input accumulation to growth driven by efficiency and innovation. A key indicator of improved efficiency is Total Factor Productivity (TFP). While numerous studies have calculated TFP using various approaches, previous research has often been limited in scope—analyzing TFP only at an aggregate level for specific sectors or regions rather than providing a comprehensive sectoral breakdown. Input-Output (IO) table analysis offers an approach capable of addressing these limitations. Beyond filling this gap, IO-based TFP measurement allows for a detailed breakdown of TFP across all sectors within an economy. Furthermore, the IO approach enables an analysis of the structure, performance, and roles of economic sectors through linkage and multiplier effect analyses. Such analysis can map sectors that have experienced either an increase or a decline in their roles over time. This study aims to analyze the dynamics of economic structure and sectoral productivity performance in Indonesia using a Total Factor Productivity (TFP) approach combined with Input-Output (IO) analysis for the 1990–2020 period. The analysis encompasses linkage analysis, multiplier effect analysis, and TFP analysis. The findings indicate that while the Indonesian economy is underpinned by the manufacturing industry, the sector's role has steadily declined, as evidenced by weakening linkages and multiplier effects. Furthermore, efficiency in this sector has deteriorated, with TFP tending to be negative. In contrast, the services sector has demonstrated progressive TFP growth and an expanding role in the Indonesian economy, reflected in its linkages and multiplier effects. Meanwhile, the agricultural sector has shown declining efficiency due to negative TFP values across most of its sub-sectors and its role regarding linkages and multiplier effects has remained largely unchanged over time. Therefore, to drive Indonesia's economic transformation, the sectors targeted for development must not only be strongly integrated into local supply chains (strong linkages) and provide economic stimulus through significant multiplier effects but must also possess the capacity for continuous efficiency improvement (positive TFP growth).
