Yellowfin tuna is a large pelagic fish with important ecological and economic value in the Indian Ocean, including the waters of West Sumatra. The high exploitation of yellowfin tuna requires a science-based management approach to ensure that fishing activities remain productive, selective, and sustainable. This study aimed to map the spatial and temporal distribution of environmental parameters, analyze the size structure and catch composition, develop a Generalized Additive Model (GAM) by integrating environmental parameters, fishing technology factors, and fish biological factors, and determine yellowfin tuna fishing grounds based on the prediction results of the DPI-LTP Model and temporal integration with the DPI-LTU Model.
The study was conducted in the waters of West Sumatra using yellowfin tuna data landed at Bungus Ocean Fishing Port. Catch data, fishing location, fishing time, fishing gear type, vessel capacity, and fishing effort were used for the 2019–2024 period. Fish biological data in the form of fork length were used for 2019, 2020, and 2024. The environmental parameters analyzed included sea surface temperature, chlorophyll-a, salinity, and sea surface height. Environmental parameter analysis was necessary because the occurrence of yellowfin tuna is related to the suitability of oceanographic conditions. Sea surface temperature affects thermal habitat suitability, chlorophyll-a indicates primary productivity related to food availability, salinity reflects water mass characteristics, and sea surface height represents sea surface dynamics that may form fish aggregation zones.
The results showed that environmental parameters in the waters of West Sumatra varied among seasons and regions. These variations formed different environmental characteristics among the coastal waters of West Sumatra, the Mentawai Islands, and the offshore waters of the Indian Ocean. Analysis of fish biological factors from 8,771 individuals showed that the catch was dominated by medium- to large-sized fish. Classification using the legal-size threshold of 99 cm FL showed that 8,207 individuals, or approximately 94%, were categorized as legal-sized fish, while 564 individuals, or approximately 6%, were categorized as below the legal-size threshold.
GAM modeling was developed using two main models, namely the DPI-LTP Model and the DPI-LTU Model. The DPI-LTP Model used Y1 as the response variable representing yellowfin tuna production, while the DPI-LTU Model used Y2 as the response variable representing yellowfin tuna size. The most influential parameters on Y1 were s(X4,X5), s(X8), s(X10), s(X9), s(X7), and s(X6). The best DPI-LTP Model was Y1 ~ X1 + X2 + X3 + s(X4,X5) + s(X6) + s(X7) + s(X8) + s(X9) + s(X10), with a Negative Binomial distribution. This model produced an AIC of 155,482.9, a CDE of 11.5%, and an R² of 0.0954. These values indicate that the DPI-LTP Model was able to explain part of the variation in yellowfin tuna production based on the combination of environmental parameters and fishing technology factors.
The DPI-LTU Model showed that the most influential parameters on Y2 were s(X9), s(X6), s(X5), s(X7), and s(X8). The best DPI-LTU Model was Y2 ~ X1 + X2 + X3 + X4 + s(X5) + s(X6) + s(X7) + s(X8) + s(X9), with a Poisson distribution. This model produced an AIC of 77,913.73, a CDE of 28.74%, and an R² of 0.2750. These values indicate that the DPI-LTU Model was able to explain part of the variation in yellowfin tuna size based on the combination of fish biological factors, environmental parameters, and fishing technology factors. The results of both models showed that yellowfin tuna production and size were influenced by the combined effects of environmental parameters, fish biological factors, and fishing technology factors.
The spatial-temporal mapping of DPI-LTP Model predictions showed that potential yellowfin tuna fishing grounds in the waters of West Sumatra had a dynamic pattern. Spatially, medium to high DPI classes were more frequently found around the Mentawai Islands, particularly around Siberut Island, Sipora Island, North Pagai Island, South Pagai Island, and the eastern waters of the islands toward the western coast of Sumatra. The western area directly facing the Indian Ocean tended to be dominated by low DPI classes. Temporally, medium to high DPI classes shifted among seasons, with stronger potential in March and December and the continued development of potential zones in several other months.
The DPI-LTU Model showed that the monthly marginal mean estimates of FL for the four reference fishing gears were above the legal-size threshold. Temporal integration of the DPI-LTP and DPI-LTU Models resulted in two DPI statuses, namely Highly Potential DPI and Potential DPI. During the Northwest Monsoon, Highly Potential DPI occurred in December, January, and February. During the First Transition Season, Highly Potential DPI occurred in March, while Potential DPI occurred in April and May. During the Southeast Monsoon, Highly Potential DPI occurred in June, July, and August. During the Second Transition Season, Highly Potential DPI occurred in September, while Potential DPI occurred in October and November. No month was classified as Less Potential DPI because all months had a high DPI-LTU category.
The novelty of this study lies in developing a yellowfin tuna fishing ground model that integrates three main components, namely environmental parameters (sea surface temperature, chlorophyll-a, salinity, and sea surface height), fish biological factors (fork length), and fishing technology factors (fishing year, fishing month, fishing gear type, fishing location, and vessel capacity) through the GAM approach. This approach produces a more comprehensive DPI model because it considers yellowfin tuna production, habitat characteristics, fishing characteristics, and legal-sized fish. The results of this study can serve as a scientific basis for developing an adaptive and selective DPI information system that supports sustainable yellowfin tuna fisheries management in the waters of West Sumatra.
