Strategi Penyutradaraan dalam Film Dokumenter: Sampai Semua Bebas
Abstract
This final project focuses on the directing strategy employed in the documentary film “Sampai Semua Bebas” to represent issues of democracy, civic space, and freedom of expression through an oral history approach. The project was initiated by the absence of a coherent audiovisual narrative that integrates the various documentations of the post-detention events following the August 2025 demonstrations. Existing documentation is largely fragmented, consisting of short video clips, social media posts, and news reports that portray only partial aspects of the events. Consequently, the relationship between the events, their consequences, and the lived experiences of the participants has not been comprehensively represented. This project aims to explain the implementation of directing strategies in the production of the documentary film and the application of mise-en-scene in constructing visual meaning while preserving the documentary's factual nature.
The project adopted a media production development approach by adapting Michael Rabiger directing stages as the primary theoretical framework and Sheila Curran Bernard documentary storytelling approach as the supporting framework. The production process was carried out through iterative pre-production, production, and post-production stages, enabling creative decisions to adapt to findings that emerged throughout the filmmaking process. These stages included story development, research, narrative structuring, participant selection, filming and interviewing, editing, and final post-production. The visual analysis was based on David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson mise-en-scene theory, encompassing set design, lighting, wardrobe design, and staging (acting and blocking). The implementation of these visual elements was deliberately limited to strengthening visual context without altering factual events or the participants' authentic experiences, thereby maintaining consistency with the expository documentary mode and the oral history approach.
The findings demonstrate that a systematically designed directing strategy produced a narrative structure that was both coherent and adaptable to factual developments throughout the production process. The human story approach positioned the participants' personal experiences as the primary entry point for understanding issues of democracy, while the application of mise-en-scene reinforced the visual context through the selection of locations, lighting, wardrobe, and participant positioning without introducing dramatization. The implementation of clearly defined boundaries of directorial construction ensured that every visual decision was intended solely to clarify context and strengthen the communication of factual information rather than manipulate the reality experienced by the participants. This project resulted in the documentary film “Sampai Semua Bebas”, which is expected to serve as a medium for public education, reflection, and discussion on democracy and freedom of expression, while also providing a reference for future documentary filmmakers in developing directing strategies that are systematic, adaptive, and committed to factual integrity.
