Oriented strand board (OSB) is a composite product that has potential to be developed as an alternative lignocellulosic-based construction material. Andong bamboo has fast growth, abundant availability, and good mechanical properties, making it a potential raw material for OSB. However, bamboo has non-uniform properties and high water absorption, which can affect the quality of the boards produced. In addition, the use of formaldehyde-based synthetic adhesives still raises environmental and health concerns. Therefore, efforts are needed to improve the quality of the raw material while also developing a more environmentally friendly adhesive system. This study aims to analyze the effect of modifying Andong bamboo strands through esterification using a mixture of xylitol and malic acid (XyMA) on the physical and mechanical properties of OSB, as well as to evaluate the performance of a polyurethane adhesive based on biopolyol synthesized from glycerol, maleic acid anhydride, and tannin. The bamboo strands were impregnated with a 15% solid-content XyMA solution and polymerized at several heating temperatures. The characterization of the strands included weight gain percentage, leaching rate, pH, moisture content, density, lap shear strength, functional group analysis, and crystallinity analysis. The best treatment was then used to prepared OSB with a target density of 0,7 g cm-3 using 6% polyurethane adhesive and hot pressing at 150 °C for 10 minutes. The characteristics of produced particleboard was tested including physical, mechanical, and chemical properties. The Results show that XyMA impregnation provides lower leaching rates compared to glycerol-citric acid (GlyCA) treatments. Functional groups analysis confirmed the formation of ester bonds between the impregnation materials and the bamboo lignocellulose components, while crystallinity analysis showed that the crystalline structure of cellulose remained intact after the treatment. XyMA impregnation at 103 °C produced the best combination of characteristics based on scoring from several test parameters. This treatment increased the density and reduced the moisture content of bamboo strands, while also resulting in higher lap shear strength. The synthesis of biopolyol causes changes in the chemical and physical properties of the polyol, marked by a decrease in pH and an increase in viscosity. Biopolyol-based polyurethane adhesives show higher solid content, higher stability, and faster gelation time compared to glycerol-based formulations. In OSB products, XyMA-impregnation consistently reduces moisture content, thickness swelling, and water absorption, thereby improving the dimensional stability of the boards. Improved mechanical properties are also observed in boards bonded with commercial polyurethane and glycerol-based polyurethane, especially in modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture values. All the boards produced meet the minimum bonding strength requirements set in the applicable standards
