      Abstract

The productivity of pakcoy (Brassica rapa L.) is influenced by solar radiation intensity, which serves as the primary energy source for photosynthesis. Variations in radiation intensity may affect plant growth and the efficiency of converting intercepted radiation into biomass. This study aimed to analyze the effect of different levels of solar radiation intensity on radiation use efficiency in pakcoy, compare radiation use efficiency under each radiation level, and determine the radiation intensity that produces the best plant growth and yield. The experiment was conducted at the Cikarawang Experimental Field, IPB University, using a randomized complete block design with one factor consisting of three treatments: no shading (7.0 MJ/m2/day), 25% paranet shading (5.1 MJ/m2/day), and 50% paranet shading (3.5 MJ/m2/day). The observed variables included plant growth, total dry weight, Leaf Area Index (LAI), Specific Leaf Area (SLA), radiation interception, and radiation use efficiency. The results showed that radiation intensity significantly affected plant growth, radiation interception, and radiation use efficiency of pakcoy. The highest radiation use efficiency was obtained under 50% paranet shading with a radiation intensity of 3.5 MJ/day, resulting in an RUE value of 2.10 g/MJ. However, the highest plant growth and yield were achieved under no shading with a radiation intensity of 7.0 MJ/m2/day. These findings indicate that higher radiation use efficiency does not necessarily result in optimal plant growth and yield.
