Proton cyclotrons have gained increasing attention as alternative neutron sources for material characterization applications due to their compact size and lower operational requirements compared with nuclear reactors. Nevertheless, the limited proton energies available in most cyclotrons pose a challenge for efficient neutron production, thereby requiring the optimization of target materials. In this study, the neutron characteristics resulting from proton irradiation of pure materials (Be-9, Li-7, and C-12) and compound materials (BeO, Be2C, and LiF) were investigated using proton energies of 13 MeV and 20 MeV. The simulations were performed using the Monte Carlo method with the Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS). The target thickness was varied adaptively over the range of 0.05–1.00 cm based on the neutron flux distribution produced at each proton energy. The simulation results show that Be-9 produces the highest neutron flux with the best neutron-to-photon ratio compared to other materials, making it a potential optimal target for proton cyclotron-based neutron sources. Furthermore, all materials studied produce neutrons dominated by fast and epithermal neutrons, while the contribution of thermal neutrons is relatively low. Therefore, the use of a moderator is necessary to obtain a neutron spectrum suitable for material characterization applications. Be2C shows good prospects as a neutron target due to its high thermal resistance, although a gamma-ray reduction system is required to improve the quality of the resulting neutron beam.
