      Abstract

Nipa palm (Nypa fruticans) is a mangrove vegetation with considerable biomass storage potential, but an efficient number of sample fronds is required to support inventory activities. This study aimed to determine the optimal number of sample fronds and evaluate its effects on biomass estimation precision and measurement time. Data were purposively collected from 20 nipa clumps using three to eight sample fronds. Biomass was estimated using an allometric equation and analyzed using analysis of variance and post hoc tests. The number of sample fronds significantly affected biomass (p-value = 0.007) and the coefficient of variation (p-value < 0.001). Mean biomass increased from 181 kg/clump with three fronds to 281 kg/clump with eight fronds, while the coefficient of variation decreased from 227% to 109%. Five fronds provided precision comparable to larger sample sizes, with a measurement time of approximately 200 seconds, or 44% shorter than that required for eight fronds. Therefore, five fronds are recommended as the optimal sample size for precise and efficient nipa biomass estimation.
