| dc.description.abstract | Taro (Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott) is an important tuber crop widely cultivated in tropical regions and has potential as an alternative carbohydrate source. However, taro productivity may be constrained by several factors, including plant-parasitic nematode infestation. This study aimed to identify nematodes associated with taro cultivation in Situgede Subdistrict, West Bogor District, and Ciherang Village, Dramaga District, Bogor, West Java. Soil and root samples were collected using a diagonal sampling method, while tuber samples were obtained purposively from taro plants around the sampling sites. Nematodes were extracted from soil using the flotation-centrifugation method, from roots using the mist chamber method, and from tubers using the Baermann funnel method. Nematode specimens were prepared as semi-permanent slides and identified morphologically to the genus level using pictorial identification keys. The results showed that a total of nine nematodes’ genera were associated with taro cultivation, namely Helicotylenchus, Pratylenchus, Xiphinema and Meloidogyne which are parasitic nematodes, as well as Rhabditis, Dorylaimus, Alaimus, Iotonchus, and Mononchus, which are non-parasitic nematodes. In Situgede, Helicotylenchus was found in soil samples, with populations of 13 and 34 individuals per 300 ml of soil in SG1 and SG2, respectively, while Pratylenchus was detected in root samples with populations of 18 and 13 individuals per 30 g of roots. In Ciherang, fewer plant-parasitic nematodes were found, however, the genera Xiphinema and Meloidogyne were detected in tuber samples. The presence of these genera indicates that taro cultivation areas may serve as habitats for plant-parasitic nematodes. Differences in land conditions, taro varieties, and water availability between the two locations may influence nematode occurrence and abundance. | |
