The increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations have intensified the need for climate change mitigation through enhanced carbon storage in forest ecosystems. This study aimed to estimate the carbon stock and CO2 sequestration potential of vegetation in the rehabilitated land of the Darajat geothermal area, compare the results with those of the adjacent natural forest. The study employed a purposive sampling method using five 20 × 20 m plots at each site. Vegetation biomass was estimated using destructive and non-destructive methods according to growth stage. The results showed that the total carbon stock in the rehabilitated land reached 8,911.74 tons C/ha, exceeding that of the natural forest. The high carbon stock in the rehabilitated land was primarily attributed to soil organic carbon resulting from land management practices, particularly the application of organic fertilizer. The estimated CO2 sequestration potential was 261. 18 tons CO2e/ha. Furthermore, the rehabilitated land demonstrated considerable potential for continued carbon sequestration as vegetation succession progresses, indicating an increasing capacity for long-term carbon storage.
