      Abstract

The natural radionuclide Lead-210 (Pb-210) is widely used as a radiochemical tracer for marine sediment geochronology, enabling the reconstruction of depositional histories over a timescale of approximately the past 100 years. This approach allows for the temporal reconstruction of sediment accumulation rates as well as the establishment of a chronological framework for particle deposition on the seafloor. Within sedimentary systems, Pb-210 occurs in two main fractions: supported Pb-210, which is produced in situ from the decay of its parent isotope Radium-226 (Ra-226) within the sediment matrix, and unsupported (excess) Pb-210, which originates from atmospheric deposition and enters aquatic systems through precipitation and particle scavenging processes. The unsupported Pb-210 fraction is not in equilibrium with its parent isotope and thus serves as the primary basis for sediment dating analyses. One of the materials commonly found in marine sediments is microplastics, which are pollutants derived from the fragmentation of plastic debris and are deposited together with fine sediment particles and organic matter that act as carriers for excess Pb-210. The physical interactions between microplastics and the sediment matrix facilitate their preservation within vertically stratified sediment layers, allowing their distribution to be analyzed chronologically based on Pb-210 activity profiles. Therefore, the application of Pb-210 radiochemical geochronology provides a robust methodological framework for reconstructing the depositional history and accumulation dynamics of microplastics in marine environments. Based on sediment dating derived from the vertical distribution of excess Pb-210, the reconstructed sediment chronology reveals an increase in microplastic abundance in younger sediment layers compared to older ones. This pattern is statistically supported by both Pearson and Spearman correlation analyses between sediment depth and microplastic abundance, which show negative relationships in both samples. These negative correlation coefficients indicate that shallower sediment layers, representing more recent depositional periods, contain higher microplastic abundances, consistent with the global increase in plastic production and usage since the mid-20th century. Sedimentation rates derived from excess Pb-210 decay reflect the depositional flux of particles to the seabed and act as a primary control on microplastic burial processes. Sediment intervals with higher sedimentation rates exhibit greater microplastic accumulation, which is associated with increased inputs of suspended materials from terrestrial sources and anthropogenic activities in the Teluk Hurun area. This region is known to experience environmental pressure due to coastal aquaculture activities and elevated nutrient loads, which enhance particle deposition dynamics. These conditions facilitate the rapid entrapment and stabilization of microplastics within the sediment matrix. Correlation analysis between sedimentation rate and microplastic abundance reveals a weak positive relationship in both samples, indicating a tendency for higher sedimentation rates to be associated with greater microplastic abundance, although this relationship is not statistically dominant. These findings suggest that microplastic abundance is more strongly controlled by the availability of pollutant sources in the water column rather than solely by the physical dynamics of sedimentation.
